The Taos County community is mourning the loss of Sergeant Joseph Apodaca, a dedicated law enforcement officer who died Friday night following a tragic motorcycle crash while assisting in the search for a reckless driver, according to the New Mexico State Police.
Officials said the crash occurred around 10:25 p.m. on May 22 along State Road 518 as deputies from the Taos County Sheriff’s Office were actively searching for a reckless driver in the area. Investigators reported that a deputy operating a marked pickup truck began making a left turn into a dirt driveway when Sergeant Apodaca, who was riding a department-issued police motorcycle, collided with the driver’s side of the vehicle.
Authorities confirmed that Apodaca sustained fatal injuries in the crash and was pronounced deceased at 11:44 p.m. Friday by the Office of the Medical Investigator.
News of his death spread quickly Saturday morning, prompting an outpouring of grief from community leaders, fellow officers, and residents throughout Taos County. Officials across multiple agencies expressed condolences while honoring Apodaca’s years of dedicated service to the community.
“Our hearts are heavy as we mourn the loss of Sergeant Joseph Apodaca, who dedicated his life to serving and protecting the people of Taos County,” said New Mexico State Police Chief Matthew Broom in a public statement following the tragedy.
Miguel Romero also shared condolences, describing the loss as profound and extending support to Apodaca’s family, colleagues, and loved ones. Romero honored him as a committed public servant who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving his community.
Sheriff Steve Miera remembered Apodaca as a respected leader who served with professionalism, humility, and unwavering dedication throughout his career. According to Miera, Apodaca earned the trust and admiration of fellow deputies through both his leadership and his commitment to public service.
Sergeant Apodaca began his career with Taos County in 2014 at the Adult Detention Center before joining the Sheriff’s Office in 2018. Over the years, he rose through the ranks to become a sergeant, building a reputation as a dependable and respected member of the department.
